Affiliate - A person who owns a business between the original manufacturer and the client (end user).

Affiliate site - Independent site that promotes other site for commission.

Affiliate Program - Program that allows websites to sell products on a commission basis.

Algorithm - Rules used by search engine companies to determine the relevancy of a web page for any particular search term.

Anchor Text - The text with a hyperlink. Also known as Link Text.

Architext Spider - spider of the Excite search engine.

ASP (Active Server Pages) - Server based scripting language used to build database driven web sites with dynamic content.

Automated Submissions - Use of web tools or software to submit sites to search engines and directories.

Blog - Online journal that helps novice users to update their blogs.

Back Link - Inbound links from other domains pointing to an URL.

Click Tracking - Counting the number of clicks that a link achieves through a counter program.

Cloaking - A spam trick generally used to get search engine positions. Different pages are displayed depending on the circumstances.

CPA (Cost Per Action) - Payment by the advertiser websites for advertising only if the visitor buys something.

CPC (Cost Per Click) - Amount paid by the websites to search engines for the number of visitors send to them by the search engines on the basis of per click.

Crawler - A Spider that downloads multiple pages from the same domain.

Crawling - The spider that look for links in the pages (urls) it downloads and then crawl down through the domain.

Cross Linking - The inner linking among a group of domains those are owned by a single individual. This is often done for increasing link popularity.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) - Simple and common display styles usually added to webpages.

Dead Link - A hyperlink for which no destination page exists.

Deep link - Link to a page from one website that is located deep in the site from a different website.

Directory - Organization of websites based on themes. The Open Directory (ODP) and the Yahoo Directory are the two largest directories on the Internet.

Direct Hit - A system that counts clicks by the user on various serps.

Doorway pages - Web pages created specifically for search engine rankings and not for the benefit of visitors.

Dynamic content - The information that changes automatically on web pages.

Dynamic IP Address - IP addresses that change every time when connected to the internet.

Entry Page - A page with a logo and "click here" to enter the website.

Error Log File - Logs run and maintain by web servers to show web site errors.

Frames - Websites that appear to have multiple windows within one browser. Framed sites are usually not indexed by search engines.

Freshbot - The daily mode of operation by Google's spider in which spider downloads high ranking or regularly modified pages (fresh pages) approximatly every 24 to 72 hours. (The other mode of Google's spider is "deepcrawler" that indexes the entire web once or twice a month.

Free for All (FFA) pages - Web pages that contain only links to other pages. It contains very less or no content. FFA pages allow anyone to add a link to it.

Gateway Domain Names - A domain name that directs traffic to a main site. It usually contains the major keywords in it to catch browsers searching for the realated.

Gateway Page - The initial page submitted to search engines whose function is to lead the visitors to other pages of the website.

GoogleBot - Spider used by Google.

Google Washing - The accidental or intentional placement of an idea, phrase, or word through the search engines. example: "windows" used to be made of glass - now it is an operating system.


H
Hand Submissions - Submissions of websites to search engines & directories manually by developing unique appropriate titles and descriptions for each submission.

Heading Tag - An HTML tag used to write the heading of a page.They appears in 6 sizes.
Example :< H1>.< /H1>, < H2>.< /H2> and so on.

HiddenText - If the text color is same as the background color on which it is placed, then the text is refer to as hidden text. This is considered as a spam technique.

Hit - From the visitors point of view it is a request made to the webserver for a text or an image file. From the SE point of view it is a measure that is used to count the number of webpages returned for a query.

Hyperlink - Underlined text or phrases that will take you to another page on clicking.

HyperText Markup Language - The language used to develop web pages.

HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) - The protocol that communicate between web browsers and web servers.

Inbound Link - Link to a particular page from other sites.

Indexer - Indexer is a program that process the information collected by search engines from webpages. It removes all HTML tags, compresses the page by clearing the filter words and stores them in a online database in an accessible format.

Internet Protocol Address (IP Address) - This is a unique four number IP Address through which data from your computer find its way to websites to and fro. It may vary each time when attached to the ISP so is referred to as (D) Dynamic IP address. But if it remains the same from connection to connection then it is refer to as (S) Static IP address.

IP Delivery - A technique of serving customized content page in reply to a page requested from a specific IP address.

IP Spoofing - A technique of reporting a different IP address other than the website you are actually connected to. This involves redirecting pages to fool SEs for indexing one site and displaying the contents from another page.

Java - A computer language intended to be delivered from websites to a users browser. Small programs are transferred to the user, and then executed on the users system.

Javascript - A language implanted within HTML that is executed when the HTML page is transferred to a user's browser but many search engines disregards Java and JavaScript commands.

Keyword - A term used for searching.

Keyword Phrase - Search query consisting of to two or more keywords combinely.

Keyword Density - The percentage of keywords that are used in a site repeatedly.

Keyword Frequency - A measure that is used to count the number of times a keyword/keyword phrase is repeated in a webpage.

Keyword Research - Researching a keyword to find its related keywords. Keyword Research is also done to get the most popular and highest producing keywords.

Keyword Stuffing - Loading a page by repeatation of keywords in the META tags or main HTML body.

Keyword Spamming - A technique of repeating keywords in a page to increase the keyword density by using hidden or tiny text.

Linkage - Number of inbound links pointing to a website. Many search engines now included linkage in their algorithms.

Link farm - Big catalog of links where links can be posted in exchange for a reciprocal link.

Link Popularity - The phenomenon of developing incoming, outgoing, and reciprocal links to increase Page Rank.

Listing - The presence of a site in search engine result pages.

Meta Search - Searching many databases simultaneously and associating the results.

Meta Search Engine - Search engines that performs meta search. Example: xyz.com.

Meta Tag - HTML commands placed in the head section of an HTML document. The popular meta tags are Meta Keywords (group a nunder of keywords relatind to a webpage), and Meta Description(describe the webpage and displayed in the serps). Example: < Metaname= "Description" content= "........" >

MirrorSite - Duplicate copy of a web site with a separate url. They are difficult to get indexed by SE. Search engines considered them as spamming.

Natural listing - Listing of a site in search engine result pages without any payment.

NewHoo - The initial name of the ODP (Open Directory Project).

Obfuscation - This technique is similar to that of cloaking.Meta tags or contents of a page are presented in a wrong way. A normal looking page is presented to the user but not submitted to search engines. This causes the page to rank low on search engines.

Off Page Criteria - The data and information that a search engine uses to ranks pages that are not present on the web page.
Example: Link popularity, Linkage etc.

On Page Criteria - The data and information that a search engine uses to ranks pages that are present on the web page. Example: Title of the page, Content on the page etc.

Open Directory Project (ODP) - A directory initially known as NewHoo, run by human volunteer editors. The ODP is used by many searchengines and www.dmoz.org itself.

Opt-In - Email marketing program used by websites that allows users in receiving information from webmasters (owner of websites).

Opt-Out - Email marketing program in which users assumes a permission to send emails to everyone who has not precisely specified that they do not want to receive such emails.

Outbound Link - Link that point from your website to webpages of different domains.

Overture - The Pay Per Click advertising program by Yahoo. In 2005 it is remaned to Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Page Rank - A numerical rating of a page out of 10. PR is developed by Google as a criteria for determining search engine rankings.

Pay Per Click (PPC) - An advertising program is which texual ads are listed on a search engine. The site owner pays only if an end user clicks on the ad.

Pay for Inclusion (PFI) - Fee charged by a search engine for spidering on a regular interval to be included in the search engine results.

Query - Intruction passed to search engines for searching.It is usally a word or a phrase combined with other syntax order to find web pages used to pass instructions to a search engine or a directory.

Reciprocal linking - Swapping of links between two websites.

Robot - A program that automatically acts without the interference of the user. In Search engine spider is a type of robot.

robots.txt - Text file in the root directory on a website that controls the SE spider's access to webpages within the website.

Sandbox - Filter used by Google that did not allow new web sites to rank well in the search results, even not for the least competitive phrases or keywords and irrespective of a high page rank and good link popularity.

Scooter - Spider used by Altavista.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - The phenomenon of updating the site content along with the html codes and meta tags to make a site search engine and user friendly.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) - Marketing website for improving rank in search engine results.

Search Engine Results Page (SERP) - Result listings shown when a keyword is searched.

Shopping Cart - Software used to store products and to keep a track of sales in an ecommerce website.

Slurp - Spider used by Inktomi.

Spamdexing - A spam technique that increases the rank of webpages Submission of webpages in Ses. These include submitting hundreds of pages with minor alterations, small and hidden text etc.

Spamming - Term used for unsolicited junk mails.

Spider - A program used by search engines that periodically searches the web to locate new contents on the web or entirely new websites.

Static IP Address - An IP address that remains unchanged each time a person logs on to the internet. It is fully dedicated to a single website.

Stemming - Related keywords like surf, surfing and surfers all have "surf" as the stem (base). Few SEs use stemming to provide results from all the related terms for an entered search terms.

Stop Words - Frequently and commonly used words that are ignored by a search engine while indexing.

Theme Engine - Search engine that index an entire site as one page using the most relevant keywords that determine the theme of the site. This returns more accurate results.

Title - The text dispayed in the titlebar of the browser when a webpage is open. It is written in title tag in the head part of an HTML page. It is also displayed in the search engine result pages as a link to your website. Example: < Head>< Title>... < /Head>

Toolbar - A user interface program for a browser in the form of a bar where buttons are placed to navigate the Web.

Traffic - Reference to number of visitors to a website.

Unique Visitor - An individual visitor to a website. If a visitor visits multiple pages within a website, he/she will be counted as a single unique visitor.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - An address given to the resources on the web. URL's includes various forms of communicating with server. WWW urls starts with http://. FTP URL (ftp ://) is for transfering files from computer to computer across the WWW.

Upload - The process of transfering information from any computer onto a webserver or another system.

URL Submission - Webpage submission to search engines.

Viral Marketing - A promoting program of websites/products/service by its customers or program members.

Virtual Domain - When multiple domains share a single IP address each domain being served is referred to as a virtual domain.

Weblog - Frequenly updated online journal. Also referred to as Blog.

Whois - Search providing information of a person or an organisation like the company name, address, contact information etc.

XML - Extensible Markup Language is a new programming language which assures quicker and better data delivery over the web.

XSL - Extensible Scripting Language is an XML style sheet language.

Yahoo Slurp - Spider used by Yahoo.

Zeitgeist- The word is a combination of two German words: Zeit (time) + Geist (spirit,) which means the spirit of time; the taste and trends of a period or generation. Google's Zeitgeist is one of its unique services, which offers information on interesting search trends, patterns and statistics; which are automatically generated from millions of search results carried out on Google over a given period of time; you can say on weekly, monthly, annually basis. Google provides both global and nation wise popular search report.

Zone - Some search engines allow users to check a search to particular zones, as Google provides WWW search and nation-wise search facilities.
